The accusations against
The accusations against Kennedy were prima facie absurd because he
was so obviously an "Easter {i.e. merely cultural} Catholic" with no
real devotion to his putative faith.
Obama's faith is in unrepentant terrorist manques like Ayers and
Dohrn and collectivist creeps like Cone, Pfleiger and Wright. The
gospel is socialism, the flavor is Anti-Americanism, and the devotion
is -total.-
Here is the interesting part - he claims he is not a Muslim and yet, a video done by a pastor on Youtube asked a question about his church; if you are are Muslim, and you Believe that Muhammad is the final messenger - can you still join the church. The answer was an unequivocal yes. In otherwords, he could still be a Muslim, still got to that church, and maintain he is a member of that church - whilst still remaining a Muslim.
Consider his past, the current climate, his desire to clime that greasy poll - anyone surprised what he would say and do to hide his past and his beliefs?
With that being said, McCain is no angel either, but when it is the choice between the lesser of two evils, McCain is the better one.

"Be it a question of science, metaphysics, or religion, the man who says: 'What is truth?' as Pilate did, is not a tolerant man, but a betrayer of the human race."-Jacques Maritain
If you want something to
If you want something to laugh at; check out the accusations that were laid against JFK. Some even claimed he would be controlled by Rome, and thus the US controlled by Rome.
Call me a cynic...
...but Kennedy was likely just trying to calm fears about himself being the first ever Catholic US President.
Not necessarily a sign of the times, Barack Obama in office might well do the same thing in regards to fears that he is secretly a Muslim.
Incidentally ...
Take a look at this, both for an unequivocal reiteration of the separation of church and state by a presidential candidate, and for an unequivocal statement of anything by a politician ... and realise anew how far downhill we've slid since 1960:
Very good old man. Very
Very good old man. Very good.
My questioning point was the stats in that article, like most people, don't see the difference between religiousness and identifying with a faith. Your article has sparked me to think futher to say that it is an absence of philosophy and independant ethics that causes folks to identify with religion in order to base their morals on a long standing code. The turn to religion is appealing because it is long standing and therefore solid. Its morals are easily absorbed by osmosis through the downward gradient of peoples psychological weakness, as Ayn obseved.

Kasper ...
That's "mastUrbation." I hope you can perform it better than you can spell it.
My own thoughts on the seemingly intractable appeal of religion are reprised here.
Very interesting. I wonder
Very interesting. I wonder if the findings of the study managed to make a disctinction between religious identification and people who identify with a faith but may be 'a' religious.
Poland I think identifies itself to be catholic. But really...... Its just a trendy self-righteous form of cultural masterbation for most.....

Hmmm...
If there are so many religious people in the USA, why aren't the market places, streets, sports bars, movie theaters, brothels and such deserted on Sunday mornings?
Even in the depth of the bible belt, here in Kansas, I still cannot drive into town at 150mph on Sunday without running into traffic or traffic cops and nor can I get whatever parking spot I like in front of the liquor stores. And there is always some annoying person ahead of me in the checkout lines.
Could it be that surveying 1,600 people with a THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY word questionnaire is an inaccurate way to measure a person's opinion?
I wonder if the surveyor knows how to tell when people think "fuck this, time to tell him whatever he wants to hear so I can go" or "Talking in tongues - is he seriously wasting my fucking time with this crap? Let's have a little fun with this overly-serious University miseducated nincompoop..."
And even if he can read body language and see whether somebody is lying, what to do then? Find some other sucker willing to waste two hours answering idiotic questions? Not fucking likely.

I admit that reason is a small and feeble flame, a flickering torch by stumblers carried in the starless night, -- blown and flared by passion's storm, -- and yet, it is the only light. Extinguish that, and nought remains.- - Robert Green Ingersoll
