"Because it is STILL a sin to write this": A SHOW OF HANDSSubmitted by Jmaurone on Fri, 2008-09-26 04:08.
A SHOW OF HANDS: A Cautionary Tale of Heroes in Exile (pdf) About the story:This is a short graphic story based on a larger project written by myself and Landon Erp with the working title of SYMPHONY OF BABYLON. The story is larger than what we can complete at this time, (a full time artist is still needed), but it is a story I would like to see finished one day. A SHOW OF HANDS is a "synopsis" of sorts, a "poetic condensation," if you will. I felt that the story needed to be told NOW, and this version is offered as a means to keep the larger story alive until it is one day finished. It also is meant to be a "throwing down of the gauntlet," a message that heroes are not meant to be sacrificed, whether politically, artistically, economically, or socially. It is a defense and a tribute to the real-life heroes who defend our freedom and inspire us to achieve on our own. This kind of story is primarily aimed at presenting Objectivist ideas towards fans of comic books, so there may be some fanboy "in-jokes" and references lost on some, but it's offered to Objectivists and liberty-minded people alike. Shine on! Joe Maurone

Thank you Michael
Hi, Michael, and thank you. I've learned a lot from your tutorials, btw, and they helped with this project.
I'll keep you posted if I do get it published.
....A SHOW OF HANDS: A Cautionary Tale of Heroes in Exile...
Hey Joe, Glad to see this
Hey Joe,
Glad to see this getting off the ground. It came across to me as a great intro, setting up the context for the hero to enter.
The compositions are strong, and I like the use of a forest of hands to demonstrate the masses. The images also registered easily. I wasn't visually confused by anything. The images also matched the negative context: a bit disturbing, vertigoish, and projected a bleakness, yet without being boring images.
In the New York galleries there is a style of creating images by collage, layering other images, many from photo references. You do this here as well, this will rather serve than hinder.
Keep going, and if you haven't done so, hit the pavement and seek a publisher.
Regards,
Michael

Thanks, Bosch. I agree. Even
Thanks, Bosch. I agree, I wish it were mine... Even odder was the fact that I came upon it at the last minute, browsing though a book at the store. The fact that it was a propaganda poster only added to the irony. And considering George Bush's recent use of the term "democratic capitalism," well, certainly timely... (An interesting side note: the typography on the cover is a stab at the design industry as well; you see that type layout often, mostly by the same people who like Che Gueverra...it's a "signature" style among the proletariat...).
It should be said, at this point if it isn't obvious, that Bosch's own work inspired this story in some part; I'd hate for Pigman to fight Jihad, only to come home to this.

Jameson
Thanks, Jameson. I did the design. (I'll let you in on a little secret, though, the cover page and the page with the red flag sneaking in are based on old Soviet propaganda posters.)

Stirring stuff, Joe
Powerful in word and style, capturing the carcinogenic enemy within in a way that truly haunts. Who designed it?
Real Heroes
Hi,Rosie, and thank you. The story is more allegorical, not based on any one person, but to heroes in general. Sadly, you can see a real-life dedication in my other new post.

Congratulations
A wonderful achievement. Will look forward to reading this and the non-abridged version.
To which real-life heroes is it attributed?
