Middle Class Chickens...Submitted by Elijah on Wed, 2008-11-26 07:02
..come home to roost. I was reading this story in the Daily Mail about a middle class family and their decent into bankruptcy because of the credit crunch. Well boo-bloody-hoo! I have no sympathy whatsoever. These people lived a lifestyle they clearly could not afford, were pretentious and getting 'above themselves', would happily have trousered large profits had things worked out.....so should take the good with the bad. There are 'some' people..(ahem)...who have never borrowed a cent. Ever...(would not know what a 'loan application' form looked like) There are 'some' people...(ahem)..who are well read, learnt backwards the historical cycles of markets and preferred not to borrow money to fund a lifestyle and possibly be caught out if things went tits up all around me (as subsequently happened). There are 'some' people...(ahem)...who have always lived within their means, even if this meant postponing things (often for a year or two), never felt a sense of 'entitlement' to anything, were prudent, were often laughed at by middle class people for going without and today are well and truly getting the last laugh. I would rather use my brain and earn a $50,000 profit than borrow the money so I can ponce about feeling very clever; I would rather take the predictable and secure course than naively thinking I can walk on water. I have no sympathy for those undergoing these sorts of problems. I did it 'my way' and, indeed, did it the long way. I am happy to be one of the few people in New Zealand with 'ready cash' at the moment, and without debts, or strongly worded letters, or sleepless nights, or other difficulties of that nature. No doubt I will be criticised for this in the next couple of years by people envious and unaware of how 'some of us' were busy earning actually money whilst they were living it up on chickens now coming home to roost. A couple of points to reiterate and consider: 1. You would have trousered profits if things had worked out. 2. You 'swallowed it whole' and never read history books, never realised this happened before in 1988 and 1974 and never realised it was about to happen again...(you were too shallow and too busy showing off to spend time reading) 3. You borrowed the money thinking you were oh so clever. You are not. (get over yourself) 4. I will happily chip in to bail you out because, afterall, you would have been happy to send me a slice of the profits so it is only natural I should share in the losses...oh...ummmmm...hang on...
