SOLO NZ Press Release: In NZ the Witches Do the DrowningSubmitted by Jameson on Fri, 2009-06-12 15:53
SOLO NZ Press Release: In NZ it’s the Witches Who Do the Drowning 13 June, 2009 “It comes as an enormous relief that after 17 hours deliberation the jury has finally returned five guilty verdicts for the fatal Maori exorcism of Janet Moses. I was beginning to wonder if witchdoctory was a legitimate defense in New Zealand,” worries SOLO-NZ Coordinator Glenn Jameson. “According to the witchdoctors’ lawyers, Ms. Moses had been possessed by a native demon for a crime she didn’t even commit. They claimed the theft of a stone lion from the local pub by drunken family members had caused a makatu to enter her, with spirits in her eyes that looked like slimy little jellyfish. Clearly suffering from hallucinations of their own they proceeded to waterboard Moses for three days until she finally convulsed and drowned. “One of the guilty told the police, ‘You honestly had to be there. To think this sort of thing could happen in this day and age.’ The fact she believes evil spirits could happen in any age would be funny if her primitive hocus-pocus hadn’t led to the terrifying and agonising death of the 22-year-old mother of two. But what makes this horror story truly malevolent is the defendants’ claim that they were doing it out of love. Not since Salem has the civilized world seen a brethren express such a deep and twisted devotion to family and faith. “Of course it’s disappointing the crown didn’t charge them for murder. Manslaughter means the police and prosecutors accept they didn't mean to kill her, when really the guilty should be serving life sentences for their idiotic adherence to lethal stone age ideas. When are these Maori mystics going to end their barbaric rituals and belief in the supernatural to join the rest of us in the third millennium, where the cure for crazy, if reason doesn't work, is a nice cup of tea and a dose of lithium?” Jameson concludes. Anything goes NZ
"The accused did what they genuinely thought was right." Justice France.
Next we'll have community service for honour killings.
Bungled exorcism was a 'crime of love'
The witches walked free today after the judged declared their barbaric manslaughter wasn't the result of any cultural or religious practice. "The accused did what they genuinely thought was right. I have no doubt they believed that she was possessed by makutu and were trying to help."
Anyone else spot the contradiction?
The Herald reports: The death of Ms Moses did not occur because of a recognised ritual or any "fanatical beliefs", said Justice France. "Makutu did not kill her - she drowned." The family was not unique in their belief in the healing powers of water, he said. But things deteriorated when more than 30 whanau members - sleep and food deprived, who had crammed into a small hot flat - began to use water more prolifically.
Their defence counsel said the ill-fated exorcism was a "crime of love."
Our country's attitude toward this stone age culture reveals a frightening primitivism of its own.
A sentiment that could be expressed as...
[this exorcism occurred with the victim's consent. In which case, good riddance, I say]
"I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great
pleasure." Clarence Darrow
Hmmmm .......
I'm just watching some silly bitch from Massey University touted as an "expert in extreme religion" (hahahahahahaaaaaa!!) on Sainsbury. Evidently this exorcism occurred with the victim's consent. In which case, good riddance, I say. And the sentence should have been for all these savages to be subjected to the same procedure.
I love the title Glenn
Good PR.
A voice of reason is a refreshing change from slimy little jellyfish!
Nice savaging Glenn
I like your cut and thrust.
I saw on tele the defendants standing in court, looking not far removed from the stone age. The only difference I could make out was that you and I are keeping them alive. And encouraging similar scum to breed.
I realise that sounds "right wing" and I make no apologies.
Unfortunately this is not just in New Zealand
For instance in Kenya, the witch hunters who have been especially active in killing (generally defenseless, often old and female) "witches".
Or here in the USA, where approximately a year ago a young boy in the Midwest was exorcised to death; relatives and church members wanted to expel the demon who had made him autistic (IIRC--or if not autistic, then something rather similar) and ended up suffocating him.
