A new movie has just been released in this country called,

"V" for Vendetta.

"Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked man (Hugo Weaving) known only as “V.”

Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he urges his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression.

As Evey uncovers the truth about V’s mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself – and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plan to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption."

I saw the trailer on TV and the masked "V" says to the female character,
"People should not be afraid of their Governments. Governments should be afraid of their people!"

That certainly perked my interest.

Has anyone here seen this film yet?

Ok, a Guy Fawkes-style dude blows up Parliament...

then what? C'mon guys- I thought you were better than this? Right now, you sound like nihilists to me- just wanting to take something bad down with nothing to put in its place.

Then, you get something else there...and it MIGHT be better...but usually it isn't...

That's what I'm afraid of

300 was probably the best comic adaptation that I'd ever seen. He knew exactly what to keep and exactly what to change (add to cut etc). But 300 was a very Objectivist friendly comic.

I'm afraid of what this level of fidelity to something which at times is little more than a smear-job on Objectivism will mean for public visability of Objectivism.

Put it this way, watchmen was my first exposure to Objectivism, it will likely be the same for countless others once the movie goes through.

Did like 300 in terms of how

Did like 300 in terms of how it related to the original comics Landon? I thought Snyder did a fine job there.

Context

Alan Moore doesn't have ANYTHING to do with ANY of the adapatations of his work on principle. That being said I can't see him doing anything but agreeing with the Bush baiting of the film. This is the same guy who called Objectivism a mental illness and the Fountainhead(which he admits he didn't finish) "Racist Trash."

I'm dreading the Zak Snyder (the director of 300) adaptation of his work Watchmen which spends most of the work ripping on Steve Ditko's Objectivism through the use of the character Rorscach.

In short, the book's creator wouldn't share any of YOUR (or my own) complaints.

I'm surprised to hear that

KingRandor82's picture

I'm surprised to hear that coming from people on THIS forum. Folks, this movie was a major piece o'crap, and even THE CREATOR OF THE COMICS stepped down from working on it, when it just became a superhero-ish Fahrenheit 9/11.

I hate to say it but even the NEW YORK TIMES gave it a more objective review than anything I'm reading here.

Remember- V offered no better ideas for how to run society; just a desire to end the bad one. Without better ideas, you get anarchy...and then just another really crappy police state.

I enjoyed the character of V, though- but I thought the movie was too long, and was just constant Bush bashing. The creator even said that the comic has NOTHING to do with America- but England. Too bad Hollywood doesn't care, and just hates Republicans.

I expected a LOT more out of it.

Ain't no genocidal nutjob bigger than that Ann Rand fellow who blew up a poor housing project. Hell, we don't need to wait for the trial!

wait, Phil, wait!

In the film (and graphic novel) the Parliament Building was empty when blown up by the hero, and when it WASN'T empty it was being used to impose a vicious, brutal, totalitarian pseudo-theocracy on the British people.

Seriously, a good flick! Even if it derived from a graphic novel written by an anarchist... Smiling

Well, in that case, genocidal nutcase, watching your old heart have a cardiac infarction would bring joy to mine.

Is quite possibly my favorite movie of all time. I'm sorry I wasn't on SOLO at the time you guys were discussing this, just thought I'd throw my two cents in, in case anyone re-visits this thread some year and a half later!

Remember, remember the Fifth of November

I too saw -V-. I loved it! One of these days Guy Fawkes is going to succeed. Watching the Parliement Building blown to smithereens just brought joy to my old heart. I love sh*t like this!

This is curious: If a bunch of Muslim banditos blew up Parliement I would be yelling for their blood. If a bunch of home grown patriots do the same thing I cheer them on. Go figure.

I saw it, and I think that

I saw it, and I think that it is a decent movie. Mysterious plot, with some good action mixed in here and there. Some good camera work, CGI and other special effects. Well worth seeing.
