7. ONE CAN'T HIDESubmitted by Rick Giles on Wed, 2006-03-22 02:40.
Great, just great. "What's this?" Social Development Minister David Benson-Pope asked. "State-control of education is failing? That can only mean we need more of it!" Q: Does the government that seeks to farm us ever consider that pulling the MORE-GOVERNMENT/LESS-GOVERNMENT lever to the high-power-for-Helengrad setting is the problem, not the solution? A: Nope! More government is their only solution! Less government is their only problem. And now, unless somebody does something, The Government is going to see that we don't mind them going ahead with this outrage and many others the same. John Taylor Gatto, "The Seven Lesson Schoolteacher" from Gatto's book, "Dumbing Us Down."

Sorry Ross, short term
Sorry Ross, short term memory. I wish more (and I am rather surprised there isn't) people interested in the ramifications...
Yep, I did actually post on
Yep, I did actually post on that thread, Joe:
I finished with:
"Sure, we have a plethora of cards and numbers now but that's no reason to make the state's desire to extend an unwarranted jurisdiction over us any easier. Once you're forced to carry a national ID card all that'll be missing is the ominous sound of clicking jackboots and the venomous demand of: "Papers!""
And I couldn't agree with myself more.
It CAN happen here
Ross, it's scheduled to happen here in about 3 years: http://www.solopassion.com/node/634

An email I sent to a talkback show:
"If an ID for every child is a good idea for reasons of safety, etc then an ID must also be a good idea for adults as well.
What's next? A DNA sample taken at birth and stored on a government database?
The state already has tentacles wrapped around every aspect of our lives. Let them institute a national ID system and we may as well give up an pretence to living in a free country."
The Police and the health department have already signed an accord to share the data from the Guthrie blood tests that have been taken from almost every NZ newborn since the early '60s. It's only a matter of time before it's a) compulsory to provide the sample, and b) de rigueur for the state to use that data for any use they see fit.
I love this book. I read it
I love this book. I read it about 6 months ago after seeing it recommended by SOLO type people and since then I have bought at least ten copies to give to people I teach with. It hasn't so much changed the way I think as given me a structured way to talk about it.
