Age of Crap? Me thinks not.

25 000 people took part in a poll by Radio 4's Desert Island Discs to choose the eight records they would take with them to a desert island.

In the the final selection, only two pieces chosen were pop songs - from the 1970's.

The rest were classical masterpieces, predominantly British.

Number one is the beautiful Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams.

1 Ralph Vaughan Williams - The Lark Ascending

2 Sir Edward Elgar - Enigma Variations

3 Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No 9 in D minor 'Choral'

4 Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

5 Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

6 Sir Edward Elgar - Cello Concerto in E Minor

7 George Frideric Handel - Messiah

8 Gustav Holst - The Planets

Castaway? Poll shows public would chose Vaughan Williams for their top Desert Island Disc
