Auckland lawyer and Maori Party political candidate Davina Murray, lost a lengthy court battle to keep her identity secret. She is accused of delivering a phone, cigarettes and a lighter to Liam Reid at Mt Eden prison on October 7 last year. She had a new charge laid earlier this month of "passing on inappropriate information".

Reid is serving one of New Zealand's heaviest sentences, for the 2007 rape and murder of deaf Christchurch woman Emma Agnew and the rape and attempted murder of another woman in Dunedin soon after.

In a last-ditch effort to keep her identity secret, Murray claimed she would produce affidavits from Maori Party leader Pita Sharples and two senior barristers supporting her application."

Is this appropriate behaviour from the associate minister of Corrections? Nick Smith loses his job for writing a reference for an ACC claimant and here we have the associate corrections minister writing a reference for someone accused of smuggling items to a convicted murderer and rapist! Surely if the associate minister believed she was innocent he would be instead addressing the conduct of his staff in prisons? By his current action he is undermining his staff and not undertaking his ministerial responsibilities.
