Well that to me is a very long way round saying that you are a believer and would like to create the illusion that you can be a believer and an intellectual to.I believe it was kepler who tried to marry the maths the physics and god all in the one.he never made sense of it and eventualy gave it up.Rather than try and create the idea that god can exist in the modern world why not accept that there is no god.The idea has not served us well quite the opposite it has caused much missery and destruction as it still is today so why spend so much time and effort trying to keep your god, forget god ,it doesn,t exist, trying to redefine god to be nature or the sun etc only sugests that you can,t bring yourself to part with your own mortality and are desperatly trying to make god credible, give up,religion and the concept of god have reached it,s use by date and it,s time to grow up.Rex

Atheism is a step in the right direction

Landon Erp's picture

I kind of see your point (but I also think you should work on your punctuation).

I don't see a problem with trying to be competitive I'm just saying that atheism alone isn't enough. When people ask me about my beliefs if the question is specific I answer first that I'm an athiest and then almost immediatly add that I'm an Objectivist.

As an Objectivist I'm FOR things like Reason/Logic, reality centered non-mystical metaphysics, free capitalistic/libertarin govenrment, and honest non-sacrificial egoism/selfishness. And I can go on to talk about how great each of those things is and how it can change a person's life for the better.

If I stop at athiest all they hear is "I completely reject your standard of value, I have nothing better to offer and I'm ok with that"

Whereas with my way I'm saying "I've heard your ideas, moved past them and your free to join me... I reccomend it even"

Rex, you're an interesting

Rex, you're an interesting guy. But a little suggestion for all future posts you write: PROPER PUNCTUATION!

A negative

Rex Wilkinson's picture

I see the problem to be that churches are an organised group of people trying to expand and take over our country.Because the atheists don,t have churches up and down the country like destiny having protest marches etc being in the public eye, monkey see monkey do if all they see is religion then thats going to be what they follow. In response to this realisation I tried to start my own atheist church and no surprises the government won,t let me have charitable status.Which political party is the atheist one,the Libertarians ofcourse but atheism is not how they promote themselves, and not all they stand for.Which tv shows have an atheist as the hero, when does a sports star get up and thank atheism,a pop star,if we don,t compete we die.

Definition by a negative

Landon Erp's picture

I think the issue here is Atheism is definition by a negative. You're not a theist. Neither am I. What does that tell you about me?

I'm also not lactose intolerant. Not a fan of the nbc sitcom Joey. I don't like tomatoes. Do you know anything more about me.

The issue is you can't JUST be against something you ultimately must be for something. What that something is is up to you but don't be suprised if you run into brickwalls when you try to take down the old system and have nothing better to offer as an alternative. This is actually what the old guard count on, they have nothing to fear in their system being proven false and morally bankrupt they have something to fear from someone who chooses to not even acknowledge them in the process of offering a better alternative.

Solo Credo

Rex Wilkinson's picture

I don,t have any problems with the philosohpy expressed by Lindsay here.I think of myself as doing the same.Wanting to change to challenge and expose the current system as incompetant ,discriminatory and ignorant. To get the general public to grasp the point is realy the challenge. To get enough people to want to do something about it.I,v been writing to parliament for six years and I speak on Radio Live when the topic suits.I would like to mount a legal challenge to the government and sue them for discriminating against me ,the atheist who wanted a charitable trust.I,m working hard to be the voice of atheism because nobody else is.

More Spin

Rex Wilkinson's picture

Cheers for that,I have all my life been self taught and don,t actualy like reading.I will take Marnee,s advice and read solo credo.I push the atheism because I see it as the solution to the madness the world faces today and if there,s a better solution I,m all eye,s.The only book on philosophy I read was Chrishnamerty, probably spelt wrong,The First and The Last Freedom, prefaced by Aldous Huxley.I have never felt the need to read another.I prefer to write my own.I,m not a follower I am a leader.who can,t spell or punctuate.I do have one thing that I can,t seem to find yet and trust me I,m looking.Someone who like me wants to change the system,it needs changeing.Rex

7 phrases or words

Landon Erp's picture

there are about 7 words/phrases that permanently scare/annoy/frustrate me away from any conversation.

Nazi (unless it is actually in reference to Nationalist Socialist German Workers Party)
Stalinism
Zion or Zionist
Chomskey
Intelligent design
Rape Culture
Semprini (no one will get that but it is BAD)

but good sentiment both Marnee and Jen. Sorry if I'm a little distracted

Nazi?!

Landon Erp's picture

Was his source former communist Whitaker Chambers or some kid in an anti-flag shirt spouting third hand Chomskey?

Let it be known

Marnee's picture

I believe Rex Wilkinson does not understand that this is a community for Objectivism. Rex has admitted to me in email that he does not know who Ayn Rand is yet he has heard that she is a Nazi and seems to believe this is a fact (it is not, of course). At first I believed him merely to be a troll. I was quite harsh in response as I don't appreciate my heroes being called Nazi! I may have been wrong about his being a troll. Anyway, I would like to suggest to Rex that he read the SOLO Credo and that he study Ayn Rand's works before posting the same old thing again on a site focusing on Ayn Rand's philosophy, not merely atheism & religion.

Ayn Rand has fought the battle against mysticism. She made her ideas abundantly clear, with correct punctuation, and she has been very influential. If Rex would like to change the world he could start by actually reading Ayn Rand -- after he learns where the apostrophe is.

Thank you.

Rex, please

Craig Ceely's picture

We already have at least one actual atheist posting regularly to this site. He's on his way to Hell, of course, for denying Our Lord, but then what do you expect? We have a few actual grownups, too. And a guy who knows the difference between commas and apostrophes.

But Spinoza was a wizard at word processing.

But Spinoza, for all his faults, at least used correct punctuation and capitalization.
