There is no greater piano concerto than the Brahms Concerto No. 2. Except perhaps the Brahms Concerto No. 1.
At one time the conscientiously cerebral Stephen Hough favoured the No. 1. Then he came to prefer No. 2. For my money, there's not a lot between them except twenty-two years, with less explosiveness and greater serenity in the later work. Both are stellar exemplars of the greatest genre in music, the Romantic genre. Both combine the grandeur of a symphony, the passion of an opera, the tenderness of a love ballad, the torment of high tension and the rapture of repose. Both touch every emotion ever quickened by a beating heart. Both attain aching heights of sublimity.

One common argument that is ubiquitous from Objectivists, and has been for decades, is that there is an equal or substantial threat coming from both sides of the political spectrum.

Objectivist cultism isn't just a matter of zealously censoring the words, and monstrously excommunicating the persons, of all who study Objectivist theory extensively and deeply -- and then dare to do
Further proof of living in the fag-end of a long dead civilisation that once held free lives up as the standard.

If there were any flaws in the performances on Saturday night (April 16, 2016) by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra—with conductor Edo de Waart, violinist Nicola Benedetti and cellist Leonard Elschenbroich—of Beethoven (Eroica Symphony) and Brahms (Double Concerto) then this reviewer couldn't hear them, and it would be churlish to mention them anyway, so sublime was the grandeur attained.

Mulling Mahleria and Moronnials
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra
The end-times presaged by the state of our culture seemed frighteningly imminent in Wellington on Saturday night. Along the waterfront an assortment of homegrown headbangers caterwauled mercilessly, in what was, apparently, an organised event; along the streets, the prone bodies of their fans—the flower of contemporary moronnials—blocked doorways and shouted irresistibly erudite profundities such as "What the fuck?!" and "Fuck off!" to the world at large and no one in particular.

I am greatly saddened by the death of Tibor Machan. Though our friendship became a casualty of the PARC Wars, I retain and cherish superlative memories of the time he spent under my roof, being in New Zealand to deliver a SOLO lecture and talk to student groups and anyone who wanted to listen to him. His conversation was incessant, diverse and endlessly illuminating.
