New SOLO Webmaster!

Jason Quintana's picture
Submitted by Jason Quintana on Sun, 2006-04-16 14:56

I am very excited to announce that we have a new SOLO co-webmaster to replace the excellent Duncan Bayne who is stepping down next month to pursue a business venture.

This new webmaster is... Ross Elliot! Ross is an experienced programmer and a long time member of SOLO. I am extremely pleased that he has accepted my offer and I'm looking forward to seeing the improvements that he and Julian will make to the website during the next several months.

Objectivism and the Correspondence Theory of Truth

Dan Edge's picture
Submitted by Dan Edge on Fri, 2006-04-14 04:02

This essay is a discussion of the Correspondence Theory of Truth (CTOT) and how the theory fits into the philosophy of Objectivism. I will argue that properly understood, the CTOT is compatible with Objectivist epistemology. I will also discuss pitfalls that must be avoided to keep the door closed to skepticism.

Readers should note that I am writing here for two distinct audiences. The first is the Objectivist community at large, those who are already familiar with the philosophy. I am also presenting this essay to my Senior Seminar in Philosophy class at the University of South Carolina for peer review.

The Actual Nature of Offshoring and of Our Balance of Trade Deficits

George Reisman's picture
Submitted by George Reisman on Thu, 2006-04-13 21:33

Few issues are more frequently commented on than the shifting of American manufacturing to locations outsides the United States, in order to take advantage of lower foreign wage rates, particularly in Asia. This shifting is what is meant by “offshoring.” With equal or greater frequency lamentations are heard concerning the United States’ chronic excess of imports over exports, i.e., its so-called “unfavorable” balance of trade.

Here’s an example that will help to put both matters in proper perspective.

Well known is the story of Ayn Rand's appearance on Donahue, as told by Barbara Branden. The story is used as evidence of Rand's intolerance and dogmatic insistence on agreement. Anyone who has actually seen the footage knows that this story is a lie.

Meeting Nathaniel Branden

William E. Perry's picture
Submitted by William E. Perry on Wed, 2006-04-12 16:03

The first time I met Nathaniel Branden was at the 1998 Summer Seminar of what was then called the Institute for Objectivist Studies. IOS later became The Objectivist Center. George H. Smith took me to an area of the common room in which Branden was talking to a few people. He introduced me to him.

I had recently read Judgment Day. At that point his revised version was about to be released as My Years with Ayn Rand. I asked Branden why he had to revise the book. He told me that he had made mistakes as to details, and that others had corrected him. He felt the need to make those corrections. I found out later that many of the corrections had come from Barbara Branden.

President John Thomas Jefferson Smith turned to his uneasy secret service agents and waved for them to go away, outside, back into the night. He wanted to be left alone, in this dimly lit memorial, in this quiet place.

On Human Origin

Casey's picture
Submitted by Casey on Sat, 2006-04-08 03:02

The following proposition is a bold one for an amateur, but one which I believe may shed light on the special nature of human beings and perhaps demonstrate that there is, indeed, something special about human origin which is not shared by the rest of the animal kingdom. I must preface this essay with the confession that I am not a trained naturalist, anthropologist or biologist but I have studied these fields avidly from my armchair all of my life. And I'm an atheist, too.

Barbara Branden and TOC

William E. Perry's picture
Submitted by William E. Perry on Thu, 2006-04-06 13:50

I think that the invitation of Barbara Branden to speak at The Objectivist Center summer seminar was inappropriate based on her recent conduct. I attempted to stop the invitation based upon judgment of her by the standards of David Kelley in _The Contested Legacy of Ayn Rand_. Although my views on judgment are far different than Kelley’s I was attempting to function within the context of the organization and its views.

I am no longer employed by, or affiliated with The Objectivist Center. Nor will I be attending their summer seminar. There are several exceptions to this. First I am technically a member of TOC under its rules until sometime in August due to previous donations. Second I wrote an article about Terry Goodkind which should appear in an upcoming issue of the magazine. (I wrote the article in October.) If there are any letters to the editor concerning the article I may reply. Finally I have agreed to answer questions from the center about work I did, as well as the location of files in my former office and on my computer. I have also agreed to forward any e-mail I receive regarding TOC to the appropriate person there. I have specifically not agreed to give any advice about any matter.

Today, March 29, MSK on Objectiist Living, attacks Linz, though not by name, for intolerance. What he and Barbara Branden have in common is the establishment and maintenance of as broad an Objectivist community as possible under the "toleration" rubric. Michael: Ayn Rand was "intolerant." Do you know what you are doing?

Notes on the Psycho Epistemology of Acting

Dan Edge's picture

This essay is an attempt to explain, in more detail than has been presented in the past, the psychological processes involved in acting. I'm going to define some basic concepts in psychology and psycho-epistemology and apply them to the realm of theatre, specifically to Stanislovski's method of acting.

V for Vendetta Reviewed

Submitted by Robert on Sun, 2006-03-19 00:09

"A revolution without dancing is not a revolution worth having."

There are many aspects of V for Vendetta that will warm the cockles of the Objectivist heart. Set in post-apocalyptic Britain, the story unfolds with an innocent citizen, out after curfew, is beset by three special police officers ("Finger-men") intent on gang raping her. Out of the midnight mist appears a caped figure in a Guy Fawkes mask, a vicious fight ensues and the masked man prevails.

Objectivist Cultural Sighting – Star the Hater

Jason Quintana's picture
Submitted by Jason Quintana on Mon, 2006-03-13 18:47

Joe Maurone started a thread here a while back entitled “Ayn Rand and Black Hate Radio”. His post quoted a Philadelphia newspaper article which was stereotypically critical of the popular Star and Buc Wild radio show and its lead personality Star (Troi Torain). The popular media refers to Star as a shock jock. He is a morning FM radio talk show host based out of New York City with growing syndication on FM radio stations along the East Coast and in the South East. According to some web sources Star's show regularly beat Howard Stern's show among 18-35 year olds in New York during Stern's last couple of years on FM radio. Indeed, as Stern announced his move to satellite radio his former employer Clear Channel signed the Star and Buc Wild show to a lucrative contract.

Changing the Culture

sjw's picture
Submitted by sjw on Sat, 2006-03-11 20:38

At the heart of the premier Objectivist organizations, ARI & TOC, is a common goal and purpose: to change the culture to be pro-reason, pro-individualism, pro-freedom:

  • ARI: "ARI seeks to promote these principles, spearheading a 'cultural renaissance' that will reverse the anti-reason, anti-individualism, anti-freedom, anti-capitalist trends in today's culture. The major battleground in this fight for reason and capitalism is the educational institutions-high schools, and above all, the universities, where students learn the ideas that shape their lives.”
  • TOC: "The goal of The Objectivist Center is to help create a new culture in our society, a culture in tune with the entrepreneurial spirit of the new economy, a culture that affirms the core Objectivist values of reason, individualism, freedom, and achievement."

SOLO Website To-Do List

This page is a Staff-only resource where we (the SOLO webmasters) will keep track of things that need doing to the website. We'll trial it for a while, and if it proves adequate, leave it. Otherwise, we'll be moving to a more sophisticated issue tracking system.

Once a Webmaster completes an item, he'll strike it out. Periodically, we'll go through and prune out old completed items.

The List

Split up FAQ into separate pages, and use the existing FAQ node as an index.

Printable version of articles (asked by Jody).

We still have unused space down right hand side. Maybe put links there?
