Description

An individual’s love of existence sums up my life as an artist from my first overwhelming reaction to Rembrandt’s art when I was 11, to the passion, color, and focus I bring to my subject matter now.

Guided by my trust in representational art, I started selling my art at 17 followed by art school in California and Holland. Still in art school, I quickly moved on to exhibiting, primarily organizing and hosting my own shows on a yearly basis. This entrepreneurial experience culminated in the 2009 opening of my Newberry Gallery in Santa Monica.

But the most important thing for me has always been the art, www.michaelnewberry.com I see my works as stages lived and points reached. I have made several series of smaller works, my etudes, which represent the beauty, wonder, and uniqueness of the landscapes, interiors, and people in my life. My major works represent the dedicated effort of the summation of my being. I think of them as my operas.

Throughout my 35 plus years of painting I have always voiced the visual concepts and moral considerations of my art.

In 1956 I was born in La Jolla, California, literally on the site that is now the Museum of Contemporary Art. I started painting at 11, went on to be a Fine Arts major at U.S.C. and studied with Edgar Ewing. At 20 I studied art at the Free Academy in The Hague, Holland. I then lived, painted full time, and exhibited in Holland, New York City, Los Angeles, Rhodes, Greece, and now, in Santa Monica.
